TAXI FARES
Taxi charges are to increase from Sunday with the fare charged per kilometer rising to 0.60 euros from 0.48 euros. Another hike is due in May 2010 when the rate will reach 0.72 euros per kilometer. From Sunday, the fare after midnight will rise from 0.84 euros to 1.05 euros. These incremental increases followed a gentleman’s agreement reached in April between unionists representing taxi drivers and then Transport Minister Evripidis Stylianidis. Saw this and thought it might be of interest - from 0.48 to 0.72 is a 50% hike. |

Looks like we'll be walking from the Airport in 2010, unless anyone knows someone with a donkey looking for work next year!

Hey Metaxaman you'll have those animal welfare people after you! The reason I posted this is that many visitors to Elounda come there by taxi and I thought it would be useful to help them budget. Back in the old days of the devaluing drachma most Brit visitors could put up with this, but add in the strong euro and it's just another reason why 2010 looks like being the most expensive year for Crete holidays ever.

Don't misunderstand me, any info regarding the cost of next years holiday is always appreciated.
But we keep on going don't we? It's hard to put a price on 2 weeks of total relaxation in a place you feel totally comfortable in, but you are right, people need to be aware if only to give them the heads up to save more. |

all very well raising your prices that high but it'll be interesting to see if their trade slumps as a result.....i certainly wouldn't pay €120 for a cab from the airport to OGA....looks like its going to be a miserable 3 hours on the transfer coach instead then

Novadavid, it's not my prices or information. I wouldn't know how to spell Evripidis Stylianidis if it was the one million pound question! I simply copied and pasted the information from the Greek news website www.ekathimerini.com
Among all the news about crime in Athens and strikes, there's often something of interest for tourists. There is an update on the taxi price hike story today. Take a look http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w...11/2009_112051 |

Hi Jerry,
I take in what ur saying and have read the paper. Does this mean we were charged for an overall trip of 130K ie one way journey but paying for the taxi to get there and back. If this is the case and a taxi will cost 140 Euro each way for a holiday I think it will kill an already strugling resort. 240 Euro for a taxi on holiday is too much.Better off hiring a car from the airport Dave |

last year we stayed at the Elounda Village hotel where they had a long forgotten minibus in the car park, we asked why they, along with the other big hotels hadn't clubbed in together to offer a shuttle service in & out of the main square......was told they did originally but the local taxi drivers had complained to the local authority about lost revenue etc & the shuttle service was shelved....
expensive 'off the menu' drinks seem to be an all too common complaint for the bigger hotels, and the walk into the main square can be not only a little daunting but very dark along some of the unlit & undeveloped roads at the further end of Elounda....with taxi drivers charging a standard €7 last summer any further increase will only continue to reduce trade throughout the resort. whilst a Mercedes is very comfortable in order to maximize profits perhaps the local cabbies could trade them all in for a fleet of Skoda Octavia's, far cheaper & made by VW after all.
